I think limiting to travel only solves that problem of potential abuse. Though it does close an option. We could have gates simply for civilian traffic. While military grade ships are fitted with FTL drives.
From what you've said. Basically we can't have an All impervious defense and it can't be inexhaustible. I am down for that.
I also wouldn't mind helping out where its needed. Though really for this to work as you describe. Everyone has to contribute to the overall idea. That means regularly check these boards and posting our opinions. Which would be fun to geek out about.
I'll start working on my profile. And what I have in mind for the BBP's base is a large dead planet. Surrounded by clouds of radioactive clouds. Essentially swiring around the strange magnetic field of the planet. The BBP spent many years mapping it's movements. And has devised routes for it's captains to safely enter with little skill. For anyone else, the shifting of the clouds would be perilous, but not impossible for others to fly around. It's radioactive nature essentially hides the activities of the BBP. For that though, I ask if this idea is ok or if something a little less extreme is needed.

I don't know if we need everyone actively contributing but at least two or three people is nice, in addition to other people who are just around playing. Things may not turn out perfect right away but that's kind of the point. In the past people make RPGs that are imperfect and bitch about it not being right. I want to start it and have it going, and let it perhaps evolve a little along the way as it goes.

Something I've learned from being in and helping in running a guild on world of warcraft. If you don't want drama. You'd best play on your own. So long as there is more then one person, there'll always be potential bitching and complaining about something. Human nature I suppose.

Well we do have 2-3 people, me, you, Carlos, and I'm not sure Pitman's going to do anything since he seems to have disappeared, again.

He claims to be working hard. And I haven't been working too hard on this anyway just because I'm on vacation.

So what's the plan with the NPC defenses? Are they all going to be the same? I suppose in a way they all came from the same level of tech. With exception of that one unknown race.

The defense forces right now are going to be rebel human colonists or Precursor remnant defenses. The amount of defense will be relative to the value of the planet.

Here are some things I need people who want to play to get done.
1. Post a faction page with all the information complete. 2. Post a unit page, even if it is incomplete. I'll let you modify it later if need be. As time passes, we'll introduce research. Try to make sure your faction profile and faction units are in the same thread for the sake of simplicity. 3. Post profiles, if necessary, in the appropriate board. 4. Make sure to note what world in specific you want to be your homeworld. I can modify the name of the planet to suit your requirements, but the basic information of the planet (ie Sol III) remains constant. Do not just give me a star system, but a specific world. If it already has stuff posted there that you want changed (planet description, existing defenses, etc), I can do so. 5. Contact me in this thread or through a private message if you need anything.

I was thinking we should have crew capacity on ships. So that we can do boarding parties. And people should list what kind of armory they have. Such as whether they only have pistols for the crew. Rifles or other weapons.
Also. Should gravity on ships be something common? I think gravity on ships is something that should be a difficult feat to achieve.

I agree with Carlos, or else Infantry won't be too useful.
Gravity on ships... we should all have the same gravity level or else there'll be problems and some of us might try to use that as advantage.
As for arming the crews... I think we should keep the crews unarmed, and only whatever units you stationed in the ship can fight, so you're forced to buy infantries if you don't want to get your ship jacked.
