Name: Maru "The Shinobi" Age: 84 Birthplace: Unknown Occupation: Superhero and Ninja Affiliation: Team Glory Powers: Various robot abilities, martial arts, and psionically-powered ninpo Appearance: Like this, but with green hair and grey, metal skin. He is a very lifelike robot, however. The clothing is a little more modern as well and reinforced with armor and hidden pouches for gear, and on the feet he wears Roman caliga-style sandals. Bio: The man these days known only as "Maru" has a colorful history. Most of it doesn't matter, and he isn't too keen on telling people about it anyway. Making an exception for this bio, we can begin by saying that he's from a few generations ago. Back then supers weren't nearly so common, just springing up in fact, and so there was a lot of fear and apprehension about these people whom suddenly displayed fantastic powers. It took a long time for both halves of society to settle back into uneasy peace, and it should be no surprise that radicals and supremacists on both sides bucked heads with one another and bystanders to try and shape the world into their image in those turbulent times. It's worth noting that the story of a one Doctor Pro E. Lium begins here as well, although he didn't go by that name at the time. The villain masterminded an alliance between an R&D corporation, the US military, and an obscure religious cult that sought to bring mankind into the next stage of evolution at best, or at worst, give the normal people a weapon with which to fight back against the supers. Many of whom possessed great powers of body, so instead of that, Dr. Lium went the opposite direction and attempted to create men with enhanced powers of the mind. How the madman did this was quite simple; remove the body from the equation entirely. "Liquified Humans" were what the project produced. With no physical form to slow them down, he reasoned, these beings could, and in fact did, display outlandish psychic abilities that could well approach the threshold of powers that superhumans possessed. The downside was that these beings were very easily consumed by rage and hatred, and weren't easy to control when they went berserk. The solution to this was found to be to place them in new robotic shells, giving the new psions a form of grounding in the material world while also allowing the scientists to include hardware controls to force compliance as needed. It wasn't exactly the kind of project that you could ask for volunteers for either. But as it would happen those years were concurrent with the New Plague that swept the world causing havoc, and bringing with it plenty of desperate patients that could be offered 'experimental treatments' and then carted off to secret labs with little further questioning. Maru actually was not one such plague victim, quite the opposite. In those days, when he was younger, he lead a gang of vigilantes known as "The Ronin", whom fought against just about everyone they saw as 'evil'. New super villains, other gangs, corrupt government officials and plutocrats, you name it. It came to be that the Ronin would end up hearing about the kinds of things Dr. Lium was doing and, naturally, busted into the facility to wreck up the place in response. They succeeded, but it only set back his plans, and they paid for it later. Maru, identified as the gang's leader, was abducted by the military and forcibly volunteered for the liquified human project to silence him and keep the group from causing any further trouble in the future. But it backfired, because one of the doctors working on the project was willing to defect - informing the Ronin where their boss was and helping to stage a breakout, and as well giving Maru a new robot body free from the usual restrains built into other subjects. That time they had enough hard evidence to get the press involved and create a massive scandal that ended with a lot of men in prison, dead, or in jobs with no hope of advancement. The rest of the army and government worked to cover it up while feeding the public a few tasty scapegoats. The Ronins and other vigilantes tried their best to snap up the real ringleaders before they could go to ground, but most of the real masterminds got away. To this day the real aim of the project is unclear, and the public is afraid to truly ask. Maru was seen as a hero and because of that was formally inducted as one of the first true superheroes once the world began to incorporate them into teams, with powers and mutations starting to become more common as the decades rolled on. Certain people involved with the Liquid Human project pulled strings to get him assigned to one of the B Teams, far from the spotlight, lest he continue to remind the public of the government's most recent black budget R&D experiments. These days he spends his time trying to keep his team going another day and doing the best he can for the little guys, same as before. His crew, the Ronin, are still around even though he stepped down as leader years ago. The fact he keeps in touch with such a notorious group only helped to keep him in the fringes, but that's just fine in his book. This creates an odd dynamic with the rest of his team, since Maru is by far the most positive despite probably having suffered the worst out of any of them. He keeps in touch with the slightly-insane doctor that rescued him as well, whom built him the ninja body he uses now. The majority of his 'weirder' techniques were only enabled once he was liquified, but his mastery of martial arts was something he had picked up well beforehand. Whether or not he's even Asian is questionable anymore, few people remember him from when he was truly human.
