"Thank you very much."
He seems a bit relieved that the Captain did not mind what had happen. When the Captain ask him about what he would suggest for a ship name, he gave it a bit of thoughts, but honestly admit that he's not the best name giver.
"I'm not very good at naming, but I'll propose Eldridge, Chronos, and Unity."
The few names that James suggested were not something too interesting, but they had their meanings. Eldridge is based on the urban legend of the 19th Century, where a Destroyer of the US navy are rumored to be in a teleportation and time traveling experiment. Chronos is the Greek personification of time itself, not to be confused with the Chronos, the Father of Zeus. Lastly, Unity have nothing to do with time, but rather what James hopes the crew would be like.
"We can probably let the crew cast votes on what is better, or let them have their own suggestions, then see which name would be chosen in the end."

"I suppose it can't hurt to let them in on it. The history books tell me that's what pirate crews used to do. Not exactly what we are, and knock on wood, we won't need to be, but the sentiment is interesting."
The captain went ahead and had the operators send down the word that they were going to rename the ship, and that anyone was eligible to cast in their lot and later vote on it. With that done he waited to see what the complement would come up with.

As both would be discussing a random person who so happens to be Rico came passing by. Hearing their voices discussing the same Rico would soon enter shouting, "Can I MC the vote sir!! We should make it in event of votes and winner's get to be known who named the ship!!"
Of both would notice how he randomly came in at the wrong time they could outright yell at him to get out.
Without a response Rico quickly left the area and matter of minutes to prevent the operators from them sending the message.
When they were about to say suddenly you could hear,"Hey... what the hell Ensign Burbon!! Hey... get the fuck off! Hey... He-"
Suddenly you could hear duck tape but then the next occurred.
"Hey everyone the Captain and Commander want to name the ship!! I the self appointed man in charge of our greatest election in history of this ship!! Just imagine gentlemen and ladies!! The contest of deciding the name of your great ship!! The naming contest now begins!! Now everyone please give your registeration name forms of your choices and send it to me!! We will do a vote in the main hall on the ship and I shall MC with guest stars!! The prize to be the victor forever will be known as the one who names of the ship! *pause* Hey what the- Lieutenant Commander Lint! What are you... hey nooo!! Not aga- GAH!!", Rico said until intercom turned off.
Well in his room Zephyr was, overlooking his gun he was given. One thing for sure it was, obviously old fashioned. To what he was used to. He remember seeing such a gun before in his grandfather's estate. He would give it's first cleaning after all he wanted to make sure it was fully ready to be used.
When transmission was soon heard Zephyr looked up then says, "That guy at this rate is going to be a eunuch."
He went back to clean his gun then stops to add,"Then again it is bad luck if we don't name it."

James is clearly not too happy on what's happening, even though for others it could be a somewhat humorous situation. Holding his forehead in his hand again, and trying to prevent himself from heading over and personally deliver some punishment.
"Is that guy really a trained military personnel...? Well Captain, I'll collect the votes, and inform you of the results afterwards."
He then leaves to prepare for the event, and soon a quick report of the votes are sent to the captain.

The head officer maintained a cool pokerface through that little display, though it was clear that he was struggling to keep it up. He gave the XO a sidelong glance in the way that wordlessly asked 'are you thinking what I'm thinking?'. In this case, what he was thinking was how on earth that guy managed to get on his ship, let alone out of basic training. But he had to remind himself this wasn't actually a military ship, and corporations were known to cut corners on staff. Maybe Rico came cheap?
"Those 'minor complications' mentioned in your report wouldn't have to do with Mr. Bourbon's eccentricities, would they, Commander?" He decided to ask out of morbid curiosity, though he had a pretty good idea what the answer would be already.
"Try not to beat him too severely while you're down there collecting votes." The CO also called out while he was leaving. Already he was starting to think that this was a bad idea, but he stopped and reminded himself that people like Rico weren't the majority here. And thank god for that, or he'd take his chances on foot instead of putting up with them another minute.

Later the votes are collected, and the ship is officially named the "Chronos", which matches on how they came to be this way. The name was fairly well received, so there weren't much problems with that. Rico however got thrown in the brigs, again, and would be forced to eat only raw potatoes for a week.
The supplies from the Jade Dragon Corporation arrives the next day, with plenty of fresh food, fuel, and a bit of luxury goods for some of the crew. James spent much of his time working on organizing the delivery, and distributing to the crews, and was quite busy until March 1st, when news of the Zeon Invasion arrives. Following the news was a meeting with Ruby, who wants the ship to move as they have agreed on, and assist the Peking base. After confirming the details, James heads to talk to the Captain, and to plan out how they would arrive.
-
{Early March, UC 0079]
"Captain, although the Zeons have began their attacks, it would take time for them to cross through North West China, and to get to Peking. If we move quickly we should be able to arrive before them, and perhaps plan how we'll be able to pull off this mission. Marumi, give me a map of East Asia on the screen."
"Yes sir, map visual on main screen 1."
The route that James have planned is quite direct, going along the shoreline and towards Peking. Peking, or Beijing, is not a shoal city, so they would have to head towards Tianjin which is to the South East of Beijing. From there they can provide a level of missile fire support, and perhaps send some of their MS in for combat if absolutely necessary.
"Even though we'll try to get as close as possible, there is still some distance between that sea, Bohai, and Beijing itself. In order to assist with the accuracy problem, I recommend we deploy the EWAC Nero to relay on targeting data, and to keep track of both enemy and ally movements. As for the assist itself, we can destroy the routes and base after EFF units begin to retreat. The attack would likely be able to slow down the movements of the Zeon forces, and buy some extra time until ally units can retreat."
Next he shows a map of the movement speed of the Zeon Invasion force, at this rate they'll be able to arrive at Beijing around March 18th.
"We have a little more than 2 weeks before the 3rd Invasion will begin, which means that we should arrive a few days before that, so that we can assess the situation and prepare on any extra problems. Originally I planned to have Tenjo and Bourbon as the pilot of the Nero, but after what happened recently I'm not entirely sure how well those two can handle independent work. The Nero is also not designed for combat action on its own, so I recommend sending another MS or two to escort it... Maybe we can attach the cannons back on the Heavygun, and send that, and the Flint out to escort the EWAC Nero."
His main plan is to have more scouting range than the Zeons so that if necessary, they could retreat before the enemies come towards them. After all, it's one thing to have a sponsor, it still takes some time to do repairs. So it would be better if they could complete the battle without damaging the ship itself.

Captain Harmattan rose from his chair and stood a few feet in front of the map of the region while James walked him through his ideas and tactical analysis. His hands fell to his hips, and he stood still as a statue while trying to divine the best way to use the situation to their advantage. The distance was helpful to their mission in the sense of remaining out of harm's way, it would make fire support difficult. But if anyone could manage, it would be them.
"We'll follow your route and make best possible speed for Tianjin, the sooner we get there and scope out the lay of the land in person, the better. Peking and its suburbs are some of the most heavily urbanized on the planet, are they not? I know that many of the earliest colonists were forced into space by the EFF, and many of those conscripts came from Asia. Tell me, how many civilians still live in the this area? And what does the Federation intend to do about them in the face of Zeon's advance? Have they released the news to the populace that they're in the crosshairs?" Accasius's first questions were aimed at the cityscape they'd be fighting in and its inhabitants. He trusted James to know more about this than himself, because he's not only an Earthnoid but one with roots in this area to boot. The topic of civilians in war would be particularly important. While the Antarctic Treaty laid out humane parameters, being in the wrong place at the wrong time wouldn't save many of those people even if both sides tried their best to be careful. Worse, panicking, rioting, and a rush to flee during the fight could make their operation much worse.
He expected the XO and the men to have a much greater concern over than than he personally did.
"How many Earth Federal Forces are in Peking, were we at least given a rough figure? How will they be escaping, by land, air, or sea? I trust the Jade Dragon arranged for us to be here, so we aren't mistaken as hostiles?" The next set of concerns related to their allies, and how much information they were given and how much was passed to the EFF. Hopefully they would be expected so no 'accidents' would occur.
Only then did he move onto the topic of how to use their forces.
"According to this map, Tianjin is about 70 kilometers from Peking. We should just barely be within wire guidance range, but we'll definitely need to get more from the company at the next possible opportunity to make up for what we'll expend. Unfortunately that's all we'll be relying on, magnetically driven projectiles aren't very useful in an indirect fire mode. While we could probably work something out, I wouldn't place much faith in it."
His fingers drifted over the mountainous terrain around Peking, particularly the Western Hills.
"I would advise placing our mobile suit teams here, where the EWAC Nero's sensors will be able to get the most use. The broken terrain should also hide us from conventional scanners, but at this point in the war, I suspect that Zeon will be making heavy use of m-particles preemptively to negate the advantage provided by the EFGF's guided missile stockpiles. On the plus side, we may be able to help guide those before particle density swamps the Nero's sensors completely."
The captain outlined a few possible routes of retreat through the mountains and the city itself, if needed.
"Zeon mobile suits at this time period lack sophisticated terrestrial capabilities. It would be in our best interests to try and lure them into the mountains where our newer suits can take full use of their superior maneuverability, and this would also throw off their spearhead and allow the Federals more time to regroup and pull back. By no means should we allow them to engage us in the open parts of the Northern Plain, where they can push their numbers against us. Unfortunately that means going into the city if they don't bite, and risking the lives of anyone left there." He said, noting their options as he saw them at the moment. This time he was being more mindful of the moral sentiments his staff might have, after the British fiasco. But part of that was because hiding out in broken terrain was smarter, if hiding out in town was the better idea from the get go, that may be a different story.
"At any rate hooking west would provide Zeon the fastest route to the sea, and also would probably give them access to the city garrison's weakest flank. Leaving our units there would help to cover our ship, any ships in the harbor with us, and the defenders. Unless you have a stonger recommendation, that is where I would put the Heavygun, the Nero, and Tenjo's Flint. If worst comes to worst and the Chronos is forced into direct confrontation, I can launch in my Erebado and shoo away the trash. I doubt even their best would stand for more than a few seconds against me." Finally having said his piece, he turned on a heel to face James again, waiting for his inputs on that tactical plan and analysis.

Liutenant Commander Lint listened to the meeting of the action plan the entire time looking over the map. The commander explain his plan well the Captain gave his input, she looked over everything and then adds,"I recommend we have a 4th unit on standby on the ship if the worst case happens. It would be better safer then sorry."
With this she knew she would likely end up piloting the Nero. The original pilot was killed so meant she wouldn't be on the ship at the time.

James takes a look at the data he's got about this time period, the Zeon Invasion was a fairly unexpected move. EFF did not have much time to prepare after the loss of much of their space fleet, as such they could barely retreat themselves, let alone evacuating the civilians. There's also the problem of many of the commanders hope that the civilians would form guerrilla units on their own, so the EFF did not actively assist retreating civilians in large scales.
"Roughly 20% of the world population are focused in China, even with the early attempts of colonization, it is very difficult to send most of them into Space. As such many of them are still on Earth, and could number in billions, so it's impossible for EFF to fully evacuate the civilians and provide help to all of them. The attack had caught them by surprise, and they could barely retreat on their own, leaving much of the civilians behind. At most we can do here is to stall the Zeons so that these civilians can save themselves, and hopefully less of them would be caught in the crossfire of both sides."
There is another thing to worry about that is in connection with sending out their mobile units, and that is the civilians might flock towards their direction, and they don't even have the ability to carry 0.001% of these escaping refugees. Fighting in the city would be able to limit the number of enemies, but it also has the disadvantage of limiting the speed and mobility advantage of their own unit. Lastly, the Zeons would not have any mercy to the escaping civilians, and fighting in the city means the pilots might have to be more worried about any civilians in the area, thus limiting their abilities.
"The Jade Dragon had already set up a connection with the EFF using the two technology that we have traded to them, so we will operated as mercenaries under their contract, they would already be informed in advance. However it would be unlikely that they would be willing to sacrifice themselves for us in case of danger, so we wouldn't be able to rely on them much for support. Their numbers are fairly limited, but if they did not get ambushed by the Zeons, the Type-61 should be able to fight on the same levels against the Zaku IIF, assuming it's 3-5 Type 61 versus a single Zaku. By numbers there should be 5 divisions through out China. Calculating in the damages from Operation British, there should be 2 Divisions or so in the base itself, so roughly 600 units of different types if they're all Type-61s... which I can promise that won't be the case."
That number seems pretty high, but it is fairly spread out between land and air units. The number is also an estimate, as they would be likely to have only a single type of unit, and would probably have ships and other more expensive types.
"Next we have the Zeon side, there should be 1 Division, most if not all of them MS. Going by casualty differences, the EFF would need 3-5 Divisions to be on fair grounds against that. Of course they won't all be attacking Beijing at once, as much of them would be spread out between East Asia and Russia. We can expect about 2 Battalions, 90-100 MS of Zaku I and Zaku IIF. Normally that number should be fine, but the ambush that happened in history really took it's toll on the defense force."
Next comes the topic of the terrain, though the idea of the hill would work, James himself wants to avoid direct combat. Any combat with the Zeon would likely trigger a reaction where the Zeons would work harder to develop better units of their own. There is also the reaction of the civilians, if the mobile team could defeat the enemies, the civilians will more likely head towards the ship, and not to the South. The ship can at most carry a hundred or so people, but that's the limit, not nearly enough to actually save them.
"I believe if we could provide support and attack the Zeons before they could sneak close like in history, EFF would have more time to retreat, and perhaps take some refugees by sea with us for escort... as for pilots, I think we have to carefully choose the members. I'm quite worried about the overall performance of our pilots, having not seen them in action. However judging on their personality and what I've seen during the last mission, it might not be a good thing to send Tenjo and Bourbon out on their own."
He reviews the list of pilots on the ship, many of them were injured or killed, so the selection are quite limited.
"....Normally we would have Lint act as squad leader, but eh... yeah, you understand my concerns on her too. The EWAC Nero is a two seater like most scouting units, I could volunteer but I still have my duty as XO, so I recommend Sub-Lieutenant Akitsu as the co-pilot. Akitsu is a calm and strict officer, and I'm sure she'll be able to follow our orders without problems. Her duty as an operator would also help in case we need to communicate with any civilians or EFF defense forces... her rank is lower than that of Lint's, but with specific orders she could be temporary viewed as two ranks higher, so the same as that of Lint."
He's not too sure about sending Marumi out in battle, but she's the most qualified one out of the Operations, if bad comes to worse she can pilot the MS by herself to a certain degree.
"Again, I recommend avoiding MS to MS combat unless absolutely necessary. If we can successfully detect the enemies in advance, we can work with the Beijing Garrison to hold off the Zeons long enough to complete the retreat, so there should be no need of a direct combat. The base itself should be better equipped to take the civilians than we do."
As much as he wants to save the civilians like what happened in Operation British, saving a 100 people will likely reduce their ability in combat, so they would probably save more people by not taking in these 100 people. He just hopes that the pilots they send out won't screw up and go charge into battle.

So far it sounded like they were hashing out a good plan, the one upside to this entire thing was decent staff. Barring a few hiccups. Tenjo came highly rated, so hopefully his own expertise would make up for said quirks. The good news was that the EFF knew that they were friendly and that they would be conducting operations in the area, so there was probably the biggest complication down. Now just the fighting itself, which the massive civilian count might make troubling.
"I'd hope that the civilians wouldn't be foolish enough to follow any MS at this point in history, but I'll take your word for it. Keeping them out of the city is better all around regardless, as long as we can help it." On that, they agreed.
The numbers were worrisome, but they'd just have to try and play it cool and take advantage of their range and technology to make the most of it. They were here to cover a retreat, not rip apart the Zeonic forces piecemeal.
"It might be beneficial to take advantage of our unit's superior sensors to skirmish with the slower, closer ranged Zeonic units, in that case. At this distance, they might believe them to be beam turrets deployed around the city rather than mobile units that would upset the time stream to face. If we're to avoid direct battle, that would be my recommendation for how to best use our units should any helpful opportunities present themselves to be exploited." The major roads into the area were highlighted on the map. "Taking out the roads and bridges in advance should stall the already slow F type Zakus considerably, and our team may be in a position to snipe the engineering vehicles that will inevitably be sent in fix them. It's something to consider if a plan goes wrong and we need more time. I don't intend to give our pilots that option unless it comes down to it, because I'm not entirely sure I trust them to keep their cool and not get bloody for the sake of it. For now I agree avoiding a head on mobile suit battle is the safer bet, but it never hurts to plan for worse outcomes."
Suffice to say, he was a bit off put by the pilots' antics as well, and didn't want to risk giving them too short of a leash. Sending out the operator, though, caught his attention.
"If you think that the operator can handle it, I won't veto the gesture. But if she's never been in a mobile suit before I would be concerned, it isn't anything like fighting on the ground, and I've seen trained men panic before when their controls lock up from a bad hit to the torso. Ideally that won't happen and Lint could pick up the slack even if it did, but I'd hate to lose a good staff member for no reason. However, I think we'll need cool headedness on this one for the purposes of coordinating with foreign elements. I wouldn't feel right ordering her to do it, ask first and be certain she knows what she's getting into, it has my go ahead if she's willing. I just hope that Ms. Lint and herself have a good synergy, the entire operation hinges on the fulcrum that is our scout suit."
After saying that he turned to said Lt. Commander. "I trust that won't be an issue?"

James nods and agrees with the Captain's plans, with their superior mobility and radar range, they would be able to stay out of range and shoot at the slower Zakus. As long as Lint's team can pull it off, it should be good plan.
"Akitsu should have no problem. Some time before the Chronos had jumped back in time, I have tested out the EWAC Nero on per request from the tech team, and Marumi was my co-pilot at the time. I do however have some concerns about her performance during actual combat, but hopefully that would not end up too badly. If the plan is settled then I will go ahead and ask her about this, and see if she would agree. If not then we might have to choose someone else, hopefully we won't have to resort to asking Lieutenant Broiler, because he'll surely charge at the first sight of enemy."
Though it might sound like a joke, it's not. Ted really will charge into combat if they decide to put him in a MS again, and what they need now is someone to keep a hold on the team, not make it worse.
To ask Marumi about this without spreading the news to the rest of the crew, James called her over from the side, and briefly inform her on the mission and her role.
"With Lieutenant Commander Lint as the pilot, you should do just fine... am I correct, Lieutenant Commander?"
As usual, James is making sure that others understand what he wants to see happen. After all, he doesn't have a lot of secretaries, in fact he only has Marumi. Preferably by both professional and personal reasons he would like to keep her alive, if not then they might have to get used to losing some pilots and the chief of security too.

Miriam listened for the entire briefing and soon when the Captain asks if it was OK she soon replies, "It's been while but I can handle it if I must."
Then the discussion of her Co pilot the Commander soon explained and she understood. After all they were short on pilots anyways and she soon replies,"I can keep an eye on her no problems she should suffice, we just need to time this very accuractely."

"I'd rather we not resort to asking Broiler to pilot, not unless we need the entire area leveled and burned. For now, let's try to be more conservative and hope that the operator accepts." The captain said, entirely believing that getting the chef involved with end with the kinds of results they didn't want.
It would certainly work, though. Just had to hope no one told him about the super napalm on the heavygun, lest he get ideas.
"I have confidence in you, Ms. Lint. Just leave the timing to the Commander and myself." He said, noting some hesitation in her voice and trying to dispel it with some confidence of his own.
"I recommend that the both of you go and get a feel for the Nero's arrangements if you haven't yet. You may be stuck in there together for awhile, depending on how the operation goes." Was also said in closing. If the two would react bad, he wanted to see it beforehand while they had time to make changes. And if not, it'd help to have the controls all firmly in mind beforehand. The Nero was an older suit these days, that legacy tech might take some getting used to for these newer pilots.

[March 16, UC0079]
More and more news reach the Chronos as the Zeons push through much of Asia, at this rate they should arrive in the next few days. The Chronos is now waiting on the surface in Bohai Bay, after planning with some of the EFF officers, this would be better than to stay inside the dock where they might get attacked. With James' request, the mobile team are to reach their designated point in their original plan. Marumi and Miriam are to take turns resting so they can have a 24 hours surveillance on the enemies. Although without the co-pilot the EWAC Nero would be less effective at its job, but it would still be good enough to scout for possible night raids by the Zeons.
Marumi had started her shift for around a hour, when something comes on the radar, and it's not just one or two but an army worth. Advancing from two different direction, from Datong and Chengde, with roughly half a division on each side. More units are placed on the Northern(Chengde) direction, with 50 MS, and 45 MS from the Western(Datong) direction. There are no air support or even tanks, it's an entire battalion of MS.
"Lieutenant Commander! Everyone, wake up! We have movements on the radar! Coming from the North and West, close to a hundred units!"
Instantly she relays the information back to Chronos, while waking up her resting teammates so that they could get ready for action. Chronos receives the data, and someone on shift runs over to inform James about it. James, who was having a nice dream of being surrounded by beauties such as Marumi and Ruby, gets woken up by the crew. After understanding the situation, he quickly reaches the bridge and assumes command while waiting for the Captain to arrive.
"All hands! Man your battle stations! Sound the alarm, have every member of the crew be on combat standby! Tell the Mobile Task Force to keep watch of the enemy movements, and avoid direct combat until they receive direct orders! Tell Lieutenant Commander Alden to get his team ready, we need to get those missiles in tube and ready to go! Operators! Pass the data to the Beijing Base! Get them to be ready for battle! We don't know if the Zeons have any more units in reserve, so tell the Lint and Akitsu to not miss any movements!"
As James continues to give out orders, the Zeons began spreading minovsky particles, and began their assault, engaging in combat against the 2nd EFF Division.

Alden jumped awake when the ship's alarms began to blare. He threw himself out of bed and bolted for the door without even waiting to close it behind him, boots thundering on the metal floor as he pounded feet towards weapons control. The fact he slept in his uniform for this was the only reason he was dressed, several of the men he passed were running to their posts in wifebeaters and jackets. The gun captain didn't pay it much mind, and he spilled into the room housing his station along with the other gunnery officers. The lot of them dived into their places like a swarm of mice scattering before a trap.
Earnest spun in his seat and booted his console out of standby, eyes reading over the message passed down by the Commander.
"XO says to get those tubes loaded, ladies, and I don't mean tomorrow! Step on it!" He called out to the other corporate ensigns sharing the space with him. For safety purposes they didn't tend to rove around with the tubes loaded unless trouble is expected immediately. Normally he'd want to do it anyway, but the captain vetoed it. Oh well.
Bright lights on his console flashed from a bloody ruby to emerald green as the tubes were loaded and moved from empty mode into loaded and ready. His crew called that out as it happened, just as a precaution. James would see similar information forwarded to the bridge.
He flicked on the intercom going up to the bridge. "This is Lt. Commander Alden to bridge. All missile tubes are prepared and ready for launch on your orders. Just feed us some coordinates and we'll bring down the fire. Over."
Alden sounded excited, but maintained a professional composure. While waiting for a reply he watched the battle begin, noting the initial exchanges as the two sides met. It was historically a slaughter. Good thing they were here to turn the tides.
"Let's hope Lint's good at eyeballing, if we're rolling with her intel for this one." The officer said to himself, combing fingers through his sleep-frazzled hair and waiting for the order to launch.
