I feel like I stumble across some weird, fun, and interesting things while scouring the internet or elsewhere, so I feel like I should take a little time out of my busy schedule every now and again to share the things I find. I'll start with something simple, I think. Minecraftwww.minecraft.netMinecraft is a great game, if you ask me. Though still in Alpha (soon to be Beta), I enjoy playing the purchased version every now and again as just something to do to waste a few minutes. However, the free "Creative"/Classic mode is available at all times online and I have quite a bit of fun in that as well. I think the only time I fail at it is when I run out of ideas. But you have some decent potential to do whatever you want, especially if you use a few hacks that let you do things like fly or run really fast... Helps a lot in construction. (Image) It stretched the page, so I made this a link. That is a 16-bit Samus I did from Super Metroid on the SNES. It's nothing but a collection of colored blocks set up how the pixels would be. In the shot is one of my friends playing the game with me cooperatively. This is on a custom server I was hosting. Obviously you can do whatever you want with the blocks you have, such as build houses or other monuments, as well as build intricate tunnels. That part is my favorite. I don't have any screenshots of such things at the moment though. So yeah, if you have a few minutes to waste one day check out Minecraft.

Android Artsandroidarts.com/Similarly, Itch Studioswww.itchstudios.com/psg/Specifically, I find myself fascinated with: androidarts.com/starcontrol/star_control.htmwww.itchstudios.com/psg/main.php?id=sceI am a big fan of the game Star Control II, which I may talk about separately in order to avoid this post becoming too convoluted. Android Arts is a website by Niklas Jansson, an indie game designer and damn good artist if you ask me. Some of his ideas are inspiring to me in multiple ways. He references and takes his own inspiration from a lot of different old games, many of which he seems to have ideas to remodel/recreate in different forms. However, as far as I can tell, he hasn't actually... finished anything. Either way, cool stuff. I enjoy checking for the occasional update to this site, and thoroughly enjoy reading through his thoughts and feelings on things, even if they're games and the like that I am unfamiliar with. This is the main reason I choose to share this. It's some easy entertainment even just looking at all his sketches and drawings. It also gives you a decent idea of some of the background work required to make such things and in such detail.

Star Control II is an expansive, very open-ended game which gives you as the player a lot of freedom to explore the galaxy, scouring what is probably hundreds of planets for resources, and opening opportunities for you to encounter several alien species. Including one of my favorite, the Spathi, the cowardly crustaceans. This is a serious game with some seriously interesting back story and plotlines going on, but I really appreciate the injected humor. It adds an extra layer of fun and lightheartedness to the game that pushes things forward in an interesting way. The dialogue is great, and the excellent voice acting really adds to it. It is also my opinion that the game's main antagonists, the Ur-Quan, are the single most interesting alien species I have ever encountered in any game, book, or movie. You at first see them as great oppressors, murderers even bent on a genocidal rampage, but when you finally learn the why of their diabolical actions you can't help but feel a little bad for them. You can't help but sympathize with the species that enslaved your entire race... Maybe that is just me. The Ur-Quan are also split into two factions or sub-races: the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah. The Kzer-Za seek to enslave and subjugate the entire galaxy, while the Kohr-Ah simply want to destroy them entirely. If I remember correctly, a Kohr-Ah suggested that by killing non-Ur-Quan, he was opening up the potential for them to be reincarnated as one of their own kind. Again, both factions have their reasons for wanting this, but it leaves the two of them at odds with each other. Thus, the Doctrinal War begins, with you caught in the middle of it. The distracted Ur-Quan, taking up a massive section of the galaxy, are in a constant civil war with each other, coming together as allies only to defend their powerful space fortress, the Sa-Matra. With the Ur-Quan distracted, this leaves you an opportunity to explore the galaxy, rebuilding old alliances, creating new ones, and maybe, eventually, defeating the Ur-Quan all together and freeing all the other races. Ah, I love it. Seriously, check this game out.

I have to ask, just out of curiosity. Are those one-eyed crustacean aliens hard or soft shelled? Because I could totally dig chasing a bunch of giant soft-shelled space crabs around for kicks and giggles.

You never really see Spathi feet, honestly, so no one knows for sure what they look like outside of the single eye-stalk other than that they have a "foot" like some shelled creature things. However, that Android Arts fellow does some good conjecturing of what it could be like. androidarts.com/starcontrol/spathi07.jpg

Randomly, Adam Phillips' Livestreamwww.livestream.com/biteyThe good Mr. Phillips is the creator of the Bitey of Brackenwood series, which you can find on his homepage, Newgrounds, or elsewhere. Love the Flash films he makes, and it's always interesting to see an artist/animator like that actually working on in-progress things - which is exactly what you get to see on his Livestream. Even when it's not live, you can go back and watch some old recordings which are just as well. And even if you're not the type to sit around and watch such things (I usually am working on other things on the side while it's going), you could at least check out the finished movies themselves. I have no problem plugging them. If I remember correctly, Adam used to work for Disney.

For any of you that may have X-Box Live: Epic Dungeonwww.eyehook.com/epicdungeon/index.htmlA nice little indie game for only $1, a Roguelike that's pretty replayable if you ask me. Hard as hell sometimes though, especially since if you die, you're dead for good. It has some stabs at humor though, with side quests and - I just found this today - the graves of your previously fallen heroes. Very nice. Anyway, if you happen to like simple junk like this it may interest you.

Atomic Rocketswww.projectrho.com/rocket/A very interesting website containing all sorts of information. They go into detail about various "hard" sci-fi topics, including rocket designs, aliens (including alien language, etc.), FTL travel, and honestly too many things to list here. I've linked the site before, and there are probably other people around who are already aware of it. They got a nice layout update recently. I like it. I consider it the kind of website you bookmark and maybe read on and off as you find a few spare minutes. Almost like a good book you go back to even after you've finished it once. Or twice. Anyway, if you have any interest in science fiction then you'll probably find something you like here.

HotDiggedyDemonhotdiggedydemon.com/AKA: Max Gilardi, a flash animator, asshole, and so forth. I'm a big fan of pretty much any animation he's ever made, and I'm impressed and occasionally inspired by the style of even his static artwork and doodles. His most recent series has been "Wacky Game Jokez 4 Kidz" ( WGJ4K) which was very popular on Newgrounds and can also be found on Youtube. Another series he did called/revolving around "Jerry", which I also love, and can also be found on Newgrounds. If you have time to waste and my sense of humor, check it out. What a dick.

Recently I started playing Minecraft... more fun than I expected when I saw my brother playing it, so I went and pay for the game.
