It is brilliant. Were it not for college classes, I would probably be playing it right now. I got a good few hours in last night and wow. Things feel extremely smooth, and luckily I have a good enough computer to run the game on 'ultra' settings.
I've played through my warmup matches, done a few FFA, but only played three ranked matches. So, really, not very much.
The Terrans feel a lot more complex to me than they were in the first game. More to manage, more powers, new abilities I'm not used to. However, maximization of such things are key to success. I'm not quick enough with it apparently though, so I have had difficulty using them effectively. I honestly cannot remember if I've won a game with them except against computers.
Zerg are very. Thanks to the new and improved Queen, Zerg can easily double their production capacity. However, I still feel very slow with them. By that, I mean I haven't quite figured out all the proper counters for things. My most successful games with them were against players who had absolutely no idea what they were doing, or when I massed air units.
Protoss seem the most alike to how they were in the first game, and thus feel much easier to use. In fact, all three of my ranked games were with them - easy wins. Not sure if that goes to show they are overpowered, or what. My tactics are usually to aggressively move forward as soon as possible and keep them contained in their base. Most players will see this and say, "Oh snap, I need to break through this." So they make more ground units or specifically anti-ground troops like the tripod Collosus. Back in my base I'm actually building air, which I usually just roll around in back of their base while the troops storm the front. I try to expand to a second base once I'm about ready for my initial attack. That way I know I am going to have a resource advantage by the time they kill off my invaders (assuming they aren't dead already). This actually hasn't happened yet, but were it to, I think those extra resources would help to pump out what I need to pull off a win.

sounds pretty nifty...I can't wait to get my hands on the Protoss...they were favorites.

Well IIRC Evan preferred Zerg in the original (and really hivemind type aliens in Sci-Fi in general for some reason), so I'd think he's hoping they pan out to be as easy a faction for him to play as as the Protoss are currently.

I've improved a bit lately. Gotten better with Zerg and Terran, now that I know more of what I am doing. Protoss still seem the most simple to use, however, and so you tend to run into a lot of them in the lower-level ranks.
Saying "it's just Starcraft" is good, in my book. Even if they remade the original game with the improved graphics and features, I'd still go out of my way to buy the game. The beautiful effects still get me.
Zerg require a lot of macro-management that you can fall behind on if you don't pay enough attention. Occasionally I'll be involved in battles and the like, and not continue producing units and other things back at my base, etc.
I still feel overall the game needs to continue balancing the units.

I'm surprised they don't have auto queue option... Also a screen telling you about idle production facilities would be nice.
And of course you'd still go out and buy. They've had time on their side. People are so nostalgic about this game, blizz hardly has to add anything, rework the graphics and presto.
It's too fucking bad relic didn't do the same with Dawn of War II. Though I think they may someday release a dawn of war that is like the original, with much improved graphics thanks to time, and there by not have to reinvent the wheel. Simply push out a shinier version, with good tweaking to what the original did, and hopefully some additions.
I'm sure my friend will go out of his way to buy a collector's edition. He said he'd get the game anyway because it looks good. He's not really into it. But he always goes after the special pets if he can.

On its surface Starcraft 2 seems like the exact same game other than the graphics, but there is still a level of new depth to it. The new features alone (units, powers, etc.) change the landscape of the game. They do try to help you out also by adding little tips on the side of the screen when units and structures are done, and they also list idle workers (very helpful!)
edit: Some people in the forums complain about how they wanted all these new features, like a Supreme Commander level of "zoom out", Warcraft 3's unit formations, etc., essentially a bunch of little things from all of the recent RTS games. However, I feel that would change the game too dramatically and it wouldn't even be fun to me. Considering the original is still being played today, I don't want them to fusk with things too severely that the second game doesn't live up to the standard.
It seems like the folks suggesting these things are all WoW nerds (no offense) and people who never picked up a Blizzard game until Warcraft 3. Other than the story, I didn't like Warcraft 3.
When they made Starcraft, it was obvious: "THIS IS NOT WARCRAFT IN SPACE!" They said that outright. Now people want Starcraft 2 to be "Warcraft 4". Ah, no.
Admittedly, yes, there is plenty of nostalgia involved. I don't want my love-child ruined.
Being able to maintain production on your own is part of the game though, I think. Even if they had auto-queue I don't think I'd use it.
Dawn of War 2 was more than disappointing...
I don't plan on getting the Collector's Edition. I don't want to fork over $100.

Auto-queue doesn't even make sense to me. Why would you want it?

Sometimes small squads are all you can afford, or all you really need.
