Historical Biography:
House of Gransela were formed by a large band of mercenaries, willing to sell their strength and skills to those with enough rewards to hire them. During the crusade, it's not just once or twice that the band battled against the Empire before they laid down their arms and accept that they have been defeated.
But their defeat does not mean that their war ends here, they then fight on the Empire's side against all those that stood before them. Though no longer as powerful as they were, they are still one of the most fiercest group of warriors in existence, and they proved more than once to their opponents using their enemy's corpses. This continues for many many years until finally, the war ended.
What to do now? They thought to themselves, argued, fought against each other. They were a band of mercenaries, not a group of farmers. You can't expect them to laid down their arms and pick up a hoe after so many years of fighting, so they didn't.
During the times of peace, the family hid their flags, formed numerous teams of "pirates". These "pirates" would raid and loot smaller factions, weaker groups, even their own allies if deem a risk that they can take for the rewards. But of course, this doesn't always succeed, and sometimes brought problems to the House of Gransela.
The House had it's high and low, many times they were close to being annihilated for what they have done. But in the end they still manage to survive, as not only do they have the brawl, but they have the brain too. With series of alliances, bribes, and strategic attacks, the house fight for their survival through out the ages. Not only that, but they slowly build up their strength to their position now, from a group of mercenaries, to now one of the most powerful house of the Empire.
Now they spend their days training, sending out mercenaries to join the battles between different houses. After so many years they adapted more to their strategic side, and have a different view in what it is that they are fighting for. They no longer have to send out "pirate" groups, at least not as often. Now they use their influence to affect the Empire's decisions, but because of that, some of the more loyal houses don't seem to like them too much. But to them, those are just annoying flies that whines because of their own weaknesses.
Currently the Duke is getting old, and slowly passing his authority over to Marquis James, a young man with great ambition and abilities, aiming to further increase the power of the House of Gransela. But to become even greater than their standing right now, they would have to...

Gransela Culture:
Surprisingly, Gransela does not enforce military conscription, and relies mainly for volunteers as their source of fresh soldiers. The reasons for that is that there's no need, as going for training in the military, and having the chance of getting chosen to be in one of the "pirate" groups, means you'll come back rich and prepared for whatever it is you want to be in the future. So the people of Gransela actually see it as an opportunity instead of a burden. The result of this common practice is that most, if not all of the civilians have some sort of military training.
But of course it's not a walk in the park, the military training of Gransela is extremely tough, ranking in the top 3 within the empire. Not only are you expecting to do your job well, but you have to do it even better. You don't do the best you can, you have to do better than what you have done, no matter how well you achieved. And the house rewards it accordingly, only those that can improve are needed in the military, the gate is for those that can't do that.
Another important culture is the existence of slavery, but not exactly. By law, slavery of another Granselian is illegal, and not punishable, but will be punished by death. Slavery of those not under the house's rule however, is perfectly fine, though on the outside slave trading is illegal so much of the trading is done underground, in carefully monitored markets. If you break the rules, you pay with your blood, just like much of the other major crime.
But of course, the culture of the house is not just blood and steel, entertainment is a very important industry. Much of regular spending are used on entertainment of all sort, no matter if it's movies, video games, any type of entertainment is welcome here. This creates a sort of balance, keeping the people happy despite all the military actions.
