So I was watching Firefly the other day, and talking with my friend, about the usual, how awesome Firefly was, how much it sucked that it got canceled, and how the movie was awesome (even though Wash died). So basically, we thought, there aren't that many decent Firefly sites, most sites are all about you just being some crewman forced to join some pre-created ship, which don't get me wrong its cool, just lacking somewhat.
But that's not the point, my friend and I were interested in the Unification War, and we thought, why not do something revolving around that? But rather than making it your standard 'Grrr...I'm an Alliance Soldier and I fight' or 'Rise up, fight for freedom from the opression of the Alliance', we said why not do some crazy strategy thing. Why not let people fight it out with 'Armies' (term is used loosely), why not fight for planet control, and why not just re-write everything. So that I said, what would be cooler than the browncoats invasion of the Alliance homeworlds, Londinium (sorry for the spelling).
But this is just some crazy idea, more or less random talking, as neither one of us has a good enough system to actually handle something of that magnitude, not to mention there is a serious lack of information to use, which would require a lot of things to be made up. But yeah, that's my crazy idea, and happy 4:20!

I think you'd largely have to make up most every unit that each side has. And there's the issue with the technology that each side would have access to. I suppose that you could at least get an idea for ships from the movie, the one scene where the alliance is essentially ambushed by the reapers. I think it's reapers?
Only going by what i saw in the movie and show. Don't know if there is other information out there

Well judging by their uniforms, wouldn't the Alliance have access to Mobile Infantry tech? ;D
But more seriously, I remember looking at the Firefly RPG book when it came out and they had a lot of the ships and small arms statted out; beyond this the wiki has most of the ships from the universe IIRC, and the guns were basically just more advanced versions of modern ones (though a lot - mostly the sort the browncoats would use - had a heavy "space western" flair to them) that wouldn't be out of place in cyberpunk or sci-fi, or else were replicas of "earth that was" models (i.e. guns from around the 1860s* up til now).
*I say 1860s because that's both when metallic cartridge arms appeared, and Firefly has weapons like the 1860 Henry showing up; its possible on some far-flung frontier worlds though that even older styles of arms are used by locals for hunting purposes in the same way that there's a large amount of muzzle-loader hunters still around (both as a sport in places like the US, and among locals in lesser developed nations) Really then the only other things I can think of would be adding in crap like vehicles/"support units", since ships and infantry are covered.
And some of these show up already, like we know they have hover/anti-grav vehicles if the train job episode shows anything, so I'm sure the Alliance's equivalent to a "tank" is more like a cross between a tank and a helicopter gunship (think Tau Hammerhead if you're 40k savvy) than anything else.
Also. On a side-note. Since not everyone here is a completely familiar with the series/movie. We had at one time gotten the idea to make a sci-fi RP that basically featured a similar setup to the Unification War: Having a powerful, centralized earth government (some would say tyranical) that ruled the bulk of humanity's more industrialized and "civilized"/"cultured" worlds fighting a war against their most outer-lying and independent-minded colony planets, who were seeking to gain total independence. I think the only really major difference was the possible inclusion of alien third parties.
It was supposed to be the second incarnation of Galactic Gods but then Evan went in a different direction.
I still have a lot of the stuff Sarah and myself did for it though, like taking all the 1.0 units (at least the ones I didn't deem too faction-unique, and also leaving out the giant mecha >>;; ) and "updating" them into generic army list for each side.
The idea being that each player would then have a world or system that they would use said list (which was what the "basic" forces of their respective faction were like) and adapt to suit their planet/system's local conditions (think 40k Imperial Guard), thus effectively giving each player their own sub-faction and their own special units to play around with, but preventing the insanity of the original GG as they had to follow certain faction guidelines.

"Fleet does the flyin', M.I. does the dyin'"
I have yet to actually find a store, even online that sells the Firefly RPG books, I can however find ones for Dragon Age and Babylon 5. But I hear the Firefly books are very detailed, but that's just what I've heard.
I don't remember the name of the episode, but in the one with Tracey, there is a flashback that features an Alliance ground vehicle, not sure if its a tank, an APC, or something of a hybrid between the two, but this said vehicle breaks through the wall, Alliance soldiers pour in and the Browncoats, with their Lt in a shellshocked state, retreat to regroup with another unit. There is also, in the first episode, during the Battle of Serenity Valley, you can see Alliance Dropships, though the wikia labels them as Landing ships, you can see them in the sky, and there is also some information detailing to them, but not a lot.
As for Alliance ships, the common ship seen in the series is the Tohoku Class Cruiser, the one that looks like a giant orbital city, those ships (and I don't know how accurate this is) are supposedly use for patrol duty, but aren't actually effective warships due to their 'lack of armor'. However the wikia states that the Longbow and Crete class warships, created for the movie and seen in the Battle for Mr. Universe's Planet, are commonly used and might be considered the backbone of an Alliance Navy. Again, I don't know how much, or if any of this is accurate.
For the Browncoats, I have yet to see anything relating to warships, but they could've used modified vessels to make up their navy, and for anything relating to armor or support, the same could be said, as their is a lack of information avaliable. One could speculate that they may have had their own counter to Alliance units.
-----------------------------------------------------
I like the idea of an rp similar to the Unification War, as it would be easier to manage in every aspect. I'm also interested to hear or see what else you and Sarah created pertaining to this, it sounds exciting. Also I have to give you prop's for the idea of creating player sub factions, very nice.
Any idea on which path GG might take?

I watched the show and movie, loved both of them, so upset they cancelled it, but this sounds interesting, if you guys set something up.
